Wellesley College Temporary Science Building
Additional Info
Award Winner : Triumph Modular
Architectural Excellence : The complex is enabling a 3-year, phased, $250M renovation & addition of Wellesley College’s Science Center, the largest building on campus. The building design satisfies several criteria:
1. Help Wellesley College attract top students.
2. Provide an environment where scientific research can thrive. The outcome of the research dictates whether faculty tenure.
3. Meet guidelines for Lab Biosafety Level 2. BSL-2 refers to spaces that exhibit specific controls for the containment of microbes & biological agents.
4. Create a new working environment for faculty as they no longer had individual offices.
Triumph facilitated collaboration between the college architect and Triumph’s design architect to integrate the modular complex with the college’s brand. For example, the four clusters are color coded. We also included a version of a popular campus coffee shop, “The Leaky Beaker” into the modular facility.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The college made the choice to use modular delivery based upon a comparison with using off-site teaching space at neighboring colleges. This was determined to be cost prohibitive as well as a detriment to the student experience. Student experience is valued because it affects Wellesley College’s rating as well as how many referrals are made for others to apply.

Technical Innovation : The building meets cGLP requirements. These are “current good laboratory practices”. This allows the researchers and students to operate in a physical environment that supports industry standards consistent with publishing scientific data and findings. Specifically, the building has: 3 forms of power supply; lab grade air & vacuum system; control rooms for hazardous chemicals; power drops at all lab benches; self-contained fume hoods.
The remanufacture of the modules was largely carried out at Triumph’s yard, minimizing campus disruption.
