Williams College Perry Office Building
Additional Info
Award Winner : Triumph Modular
Architectural Excellence : Williams College needed a temporary space to house faculty offices and labs during the four-year construction project of a new science center. Campus officials wanted an aesthetically-pleasing structure that blended in with neighboring buildings that utilized high-quality materials and finishes. To achieve this, a custom site-installed brick façade was added to complement neighboring red and yellow brick buildings. Sixty two Marvin Integrity windows were added to maximize natural light and custom patterned VCT flooring was installed to match the blue and yellow color scheme of the interior.
To accommodate the long and narrow layout of the project site, the 17-module, 11,000 square-foot building configuration consisted of two rows of modules abutted from end to end.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Choosing the modular method of construction versus stick-build accelerated the speed of occupancy for this complex project. The building’s solid block foundation resting on poured concrete footings gave the project the appearance of a permanent building with the relocatability of a temporary building. The building was built to 70% completion by the manufacturer, Whitley Manufacturing, while VCT flooring, gypsum ceilings and custom exterior brick were installed on-site.

Technical Innovation : The project was large in scope and included 23 office spaces, 10 research labs, three admin offices, a kitchenette, four research labs, a computer lab, and various storage rooms and closets Adding to the design complexity were sound proof labs that required airtight construction for a controlled environment. Environmentally-friendly, custom solar sunscreen shades were added to absorb UV rays and help control temperature.
The magnitude of the project presented unique challenges as the 23 office spaces were built to different specifications set by faculty members occupying the space. The College made many changes during construction including the relocation of windows and doors, which led to rerouting of electrical services and HVAC systems. Two additional modules were added to fulfill space requirements.
